The main aspects that determine the genre of a film would be the foundations of what the film is trying to tell the audience such as bravery, sadness, and even how to cope with death. The film I am using for this project is Peter Berg’s “Friday Night Lights” film, which is set in Permian, Texas during the 1980’s. This sports drama incorporates dramatic elements like following the lives of several high profile football athletes and it shifts the usual “box-office ending” of winning to Permian high school losing in the 1980 Texas State football championship. The reason for the loss is to illustrate that nobody is perfect, even on the silver screen. As a film, Friday Night Lights is both memorable and distinguishes itself as one of the better entry movies of 2004. It is certainly one of the top-notch sports films to come into the box office in some time, and that is taking into consideration the fact that both Miracle and The Rookie were excellent representatives of the Sports Drama genre. The editing of the film and the use of a yellow tint to accentuate both the economic situation and the unforgiving geography shows the coarse nature of the area and its residents. This film has been very inspirational to me, and it always reminds me to go one hundred percent in everything I do. This film genre shows how football is a struggle between body and mind, and this film illustrates the idea flawlessly.
Friday Night Lights is branded as a sports icon. Every guy in the United States wants to play football and/or express the same leadership traits as the actors do in the movie. The actors in the movie brand the sports equipment by wearing them and making them look good. For example, in one scene, one of the running backs colors in his white Nike logo cleats in black sharpie to look like all the other players who are wearing black Nike cleats. In effect, the movie viewers and consumers will buy black Nike cleats because that is what “winners” wear during football games. Social media allows me to tweet and Facebook friends and athletes about certain things I saw in the movie (For example: the black Nike cleats were very cool in the movie so I tweet my friends to buy black Nike cleats).
